Sun Fun Festival Returns to Myrtle Beach in 2016
After a five-year hiatus, Sun Fun returns to its roots on Ocean Boulevard
MYRTLE BEACH — Get out your beach chairs, put on your dancing shoes, and bring the kids - the Oceanfront Merchants Association, with cooperation from the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, announce the return of the Sun Fun Festival June 3 – 5, 2016, to downtown Myrtle Beach. This year, Sun Fun will return to its roots with live beach music, shag lessons and a shag contest, kids games, a parade, and more.
The Sun Fun Festival was created in 1951 by local businessmen as a way of attracting tourists to the area to officially kick off the summer season. It was the longest running event in Myrtle Beach, running continuously from 1951 until its cancellation in 2011. Sun Fun returns with those events made it successful so many years ago. With performers including the Swinging Medallions, Too Much Sylvia, The Entertainers, The Legendary Motown Revue, The Swashtones and The Castaways, the music will harken to the earlier days of Myrtle Beach. Free shag lessons and games for kids, along with the return of the parade, the Sun Fun jail, and the shag contest will add to the family-friendly nature of the event.
“One of the most-asked questions we receive from tourists and locals in the area is, ‘Do you think they will ever bring back the Sun Fun Festival?’ With the loss of the Pavilion, the changes being made in the area, and the cancellation of Sun Fun, it seems that visitors are missing the nostalgic feeling that once was so prevalent downtown. Thanks to the Chamber, OMA will be able to revive the Sun Fun Festival this year and hopefully bring back a little bit of the ‘old Myrtle Beach’ feeling,” said Buz Plyler, owner of the Gay Dolphin Gift Cove, whose father was one of the original founders of the Festival. The Gay Dolphin is the presenting sponsor of this year’s Sun Fun Festival.
This year’s event will be held in conjunction with the Native Sons SALT games, a two-day event that features fifteen different competitions, including lifeguard games, yoga on the Boardwalk, surfing competitions, a 5K, and a kids fun run. The Oceanfront Merchants’ Association (OMA) is a member organization of Myrtle Beach Downtown area businesses that promote the area through advertising, marketing, festivals and events.
Sun Fun Festival is a registered trademark of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce.
